Rise to Fame
The Producers was never supposed to launch a comedy career. Mel Brooks cast him as Leo Bloom because he needed someone who could cry on cue and still be funny, not because Wilder thought of himself as a comedian. The Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor opened doors, but Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) is what defined him. He agreed to play the part on one condition: he could limp in on a cane, then suddenly straighten up, so 'no one will know from that point on whether I am lying or telling the truth.' The studio agreed. The limp is the whole performance.
In the Spotlight
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory wasn't an immediate hit in 1971, but TV reruns made it inescapable. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 2014. The 'Condescending Wonka' meme gave him an unlikely second life online decades after he'd walked away from Hollywood. Co-founding Gilda's Club after Radner's 1989 death from ovarian cancer built something neither film could touch. A chocolate factory and a cancer support network: not the usual double act.
Side Notes
At 8 years old, a doctor told him to make his ill mother laugh to keep her stress down. That became his whole career. He was born Jerome Silberman, changed his name taking 'Gene' from a Thomas Wolfe character and 'Wilder' from playwright Thornton Wilder, and served as an Army medic before Mel Brooks found him. Both his mother and his third wife Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer, years apart. He died while Ella Fitzgerald's 'Over the Rainbow' played on the stereo. His family says the song came on randomly. He smiled and closed his eyes.

Tributes came from Mel Brooks, who described himself as 'inconsolable for a couple of weeks,' along with reportedly Carl Reiner, Billy Crystal, and Russell Crowe. The Academy reportedly included him in the 2017 Oscars In Memoriam montage. His widow Karen partnered with the Alzheimer's Association, using clips from Willy Wonka in dementia awareness campaigns. A documentary, Remembering Gene Wilder, premiered at the 2023 LA Jewish Film Festival.
