Getting cut from the pilot episode of Saturday Night Live at 27 would have ended most comedy careers before they started. Crystal had a 6.5-minute sketch ready for the first-ever broadcast in 1975, survived dress rehearsal, and got pulled before air. He didn't return to the show until 1984, when his character Fernando and the catchphrase 'You look mahvelous!' earned him his first Emmy nomination. The real pivot came through Rob Reiner: two small parts in This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride led to the lead in When Harry Met Sally (1989), and the comedian became a movie star almost by accident.
Nine times hosting the Academy Awards makes Crystal the modern-era record holder, and the template he built (opening montages, musical numbers, inserting himself into nominated films) is what every host since has been measured against. Most haven't come close. At the 97th Oscars in 2025, he reunited with Meg Ryan to present Best Picture, and Conan O'Brien introduced him to the room as 'the greatest Oscar host ever.' That same year, the 2025 LA wildfires burned down his Pacific Palisades home of 46 years. He's in his late seventies and still getting the best introductions in the building.
The childhood babysitter was reportedly Billie Holiday. His uncle Milt Gabler produced Holiday's records at Decca and also produced 'Rock Around the Clock' for Bill Haley, which makes Crystal's musical pedigree quietly absurd. He turned down the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story (1995) and has called it the biggest mistake of his career. The day before his 60th birthday, the Yankees signed him to a one-day minor league contract; he struck out in his only at-bat and got a standing ovation anyway.
