Rise to Fame
She walked into her film debut about cult trauma and walked out with a Fox Searchlight deal and a Roger Ebert quote calling her 'a genuine discovery.' Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), a psychological thriller made on $600,000, grossed $5.4 million and won the directing prize at Sundance. Marvel noticed. They cast her as Wanda Maximoff in a post-credits scene in 2014, a character that would prove harder to escape than the cult she played in that first film.
In the Spotlight
WandaVision was the moment the Marvel machine actually let her act. The Disney+ miniseries earned 23 Emmy nominations in 2021, and she was among them: nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series and for a Golden Globe. Since then she's lined up projects across multiple studios: a sci-fi thriller (The Assessment), a vampire film with Kristen Stewart (Flesh of the Gods), and an Apple TV+ limited series. Whether any of them establish her outside the MCU is the more interesting question.
Side Notes
The Olsen name is a branding exercise she spent years trying to sidestep. In high school, she considered performing under her middle name, Chase, which tells you everything about growing up as the third Olsen sibling. That instinct never fully left. She and musician Robbie Arnett eloped before COVID, then spent two years not confirming it, dropping the word 'husband' in a 2021 interview with no announcement, no Instagram post, nothing.
