The Avengers (Steve Rogers / Captain America)

Rise to Fame

He turned down the Captain America role multiple times before anyone gave him the shield. Severe anxiety, including panic attacks on prior sets, had him convinced a nine-film Marvel commitment would break him. That's the part of the story most superhero origin stories skip. He went to therapy, heard he was making decisions based on fear, and signed. The Human Torch gig in Fantastic Four (2005) had shown he could headline a superhero franchise; The First Avenger (2011) proved he could define one. His MCU films went on to gross $11.4 billion worldwide. The therapists were right.

In the Spotlight

Walking away from the shield in Endgame looked like a clean break. Knives Out (2019) made the case; The Gray Man, Ghosted, and Pain Hustlers mostly didn't, a stretch he's been publicly candid about. Materialists (2025, A24) received strong reviews and suggests the post-MCU pivot is working. And Marvel brought him back for Avengers: Doomsday (2026) as Steve Rogers, not as Captain America (Sam Wilson keeps the shield), which lets the franchise have nostalgia without undoing the handoff.

Side Notes

He proposed to Portuguese actress Alba Baptista by learning to say 'Will you marry me?' in Portuguese first. Fitting for someone who spent a decade playing America's most earnest soldier. Their September 2023 Cape Cod wedding had guests signing NDAs and surrendering phones. Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and John Krasinski were among those who complied, which tells you the MCU friend group is more real than most assumed. A second ceremony happened in Portugal. The couple had their first child, Alma Grace, in October 2025, and the anxiety that nearly torpedoed his biggest career break doesn't seem to have followed him home.
