He was a Rhodes Scholar and Army helicopter pilot who gave up a West Point professorship in 1965 to sweep floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville. The janitor pitch worked: Johnny Cash turned "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" into the CMA's 1970 Song of the Year. The following year, three of five Grammy nominations for best country song were his. When Janis Joplin's posthumous recording of "Me and Bobby McGee" topped the Billboard Hot 100, the former Oxford scholar had reshaped country music from the bottom up. Bob Dylan summed it up: "You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris, because he changed everything."

He won a Golden Globe for A Star Is Born (1976), which should have launched a clean decade of stardom. Instead he starred in Heaven's Gate (1980), the Michael Cimino western that reportedly cost $44 million, earned $3.5 million, and nearly sank United Artists. His film career limped for years before the Blade trilogy gave him a second run starting in 1998. Off-screen, he spent years being treated for Alzheimer's until doctors correctly diagnosed chronic Lyme disease in 2016. Three weeks of treatment and much of the decline reversed.

The biographical details don't stack up neatly. Oxford-educated Rhodes Scholar. Army Ranger-qualified helicopter pilot. Published songwriter before Nashville even knew his name. He resigned his Army commission in 1965 (his father, an Air Force general, was reportedly furious) and spent five years sweeping floors at Columbia Studios. The most audacious pitch of his career: he landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's backyard to hand him a demo tape. Cash ignored it for months before it became a No. 1 hit. His stated heroes were Muhammad Ali, William Blake, and Hank Williams, which explains most of what he ever wrote.

CMT aired a half-hour tribute special in October 2024. Jeff Bridges, Barbra Streisand, George Strait, and Reba McEntire all issued public tributes. Rosanne Cash's statement singled out his "staggering gifts as a poet." He was survived by his wife Lisa, eight children, and seven grandchildren.
