Rise to Fame
He spent the late '80s getting cast as the handsome guy directors weren't quite sure could act. Point Break (1991) changed the conversation: he could carry action, and the film earned $83.5 million. Speed (1994) made him a movie star. Then The Matrix turned him into something else entirely. The Wachowskis built a franchise around Neo's quiet intensity, the sequels reportedly made Reeves one of the highest-paid actors Hollywood had seen up to that point, and the trilogy grossed over a billion dollars. The quality that made studio heads nervous turned out to be exactly what Neo required.

John Wick was supposed to be a mid-budget comeback. It turned into a franchise that has earned over $1 billion combined, with Chapter 4 alone pulling $450 million worldwide in 2023 and earning a series-best 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile the internet spent years turning Reeves into something between a movie star and a folk hero, circulating stories of his generosity. His band Dogstar released new music and toured in 2023 after a 20-year gap. He's not performing relevance. He just keeps working.

His daughter Ava was stillborn on Christmas Eve 1999. His girlfriend Jennifer Syme died in a car crash in Los Angeles in April 2001. He's been with artist Alexandra Grant since 2019. He doesn't explain himself, which is either the wisest PR strategy in Hollywood or just who he is.
