Rise to Fame
Tina Fey hired him to write for 30 Rock when he was still living in his NYU dorm as an RA. Community made him a fan favorite, but Atlanta made the argument stick. The FX series he created, wrote, and starred in earned him a Golden Globe and two Emmys, and he was the first director to win an Emmy for a show he also acted in since Alan Alda in 1977. Then 'This Is America' dropped in 2018, debuted at number one the same weekend he hosted SNL, and swept four Grammys. The careers kept stacking, and none of them were half-assed.
In the Spotlight
Mr. & Mrs. Smith hit Amazon in 2024, debuted at number one in 130 countries, and earned him an Emmy nomination. He cancelled a tour mid-run in September 2024 with no public explanation, then revealed at a November 2025 concert he'd had a stroke and surgery to fix a hole in his heart. The health scare didn't stop him from announcing he's retiring Childish Gambino after two more albums, voicing Yoshi in a 2026 film, and reprising Lando Calrissian in a Star Wars film. He's been shutting things down and opening new ones so fast it's hard to tell which direction he's actually heading.
Side Notes
The Childish Gambino name came from a Wu-Tang name generator he tried on a whim. A 2010 fan Twitter campaign pushing #donald4spiderman reportedly prompted Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis to create Miles Morales, the Black-Latino Spider-Man. Glover ended up in Spider-Man: Homecoming anyway, playing Miles' actual uncle. He grew up as the only Black kid in his neighborhood, in a Jehovah's Witness household where his parents also fostered children. His high school voted him Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons. They weren't wrong.
