Bradley Cooper

51 years old

Born Jan 5, 1975

American

Rise to Fame

He spent most of the 2000s grinding through television guest spots and bit parts, mostly invisible. The Hangover came in 2009 because Jack Black and Paul Rudd had passed on it first. The film became one of the highest-grossing R-rated comedies ever made and turned Cooper into a legitimate draw. Nine years later, he made the real case with A Star Is Born, writing, directing, and recording the soundtrack himself. It won him a BAFTA and two Grammys. Calling him an actor after that started feeling reductive.

In the Spotlight

He's committed to directing, and Maestro made that clear even when the awards didn't cooperate. The film earned 7 Oscar nominations in 2024, but he went home empty-handed on all three individual nods, losing Best Actor to Cillian Murphy. The prosthetic nose controversy over playing Leonard Bernstein added some noise around an already polarizing awards campaign. His follow-up, Is This Thing On?, pulled 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and closed the 2025 New York Film Festival. Whether the Academy eventually catches up is the only question Hollywood seems interested in.

Side Notes

He's been sober since 2004, which he's candid about, and credits Will Arnett with talking him into therapy when substance abuse nearly ended his career before anyone knew his name. He speaks French, something he used during A Star Is Born press tours in France. In 2025, he opened a cheesesteak restaurant in New York called Danny and Coop's with a Philadelphia restaurateur, a very specific personal project from a guy who grew up outside Philly and apparently never fully left.
