Rise to Fame

She spent her thirties as a reliable character actress nobody could quite cast as a lead. Then Aaron Sorkin saw her in Primary Colors and called her in for The West Wing. C.J. Cregg, the White House press secretary who was also the show's wit and moral spine, ran for seven seasons. Janney won four Emmys for that role and broke through at 40, which Hollywood tends to treat as a deadline rather than a starting point. Her 6-foot frame had quietly worked against her for years. Sorkin didn't care.

In the Spotlight

After The West Wing wrapped, she went back to TV and did it again. Mom ran eight seasons on CBS (2013-2021) and earned her two more Emmys as a cynical recovering addict that could have been a broad sitcom type but wasn't. Then I, Tonya in 2017, where she played Tonya Harding's mother and walked away with the Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe. Netflix's The Diplomat cast her as VP Grace Penn in 2024, picking up Golden Globe and SAG nominations. Six Emmy wins, an Oscar. The supporting actress label ran out of places to hide.

Side Notes

At her 2018 BAFTA acceptance speech, she admitted to a lie she'd told for thirty years: she didn't graduate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she attended a two-week summer program. She trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, and her most consequential early mentor was Paul Newman, who directed her at Kenyon College and pushed her toward a serious career. Before all of that, she was trying to be a figure skater until a teenage accident ended it. At 6 feet tall, the pivot probably saved everyone the trouble.
