Rise to Fame
She's Gotta Have It came out of desperation as much as ambition. He'd been rejected by USC and UCLA, got into NYU on a portfolio submission, and left with a Student Academy Award for his thesis film. The debut was shot in 12 days for $175,000 on credit cards. Then Do the Right Thing arrived in 1989 and became a cultural argument. The Academy refused to nominate it for Best Picture or Lee for director, so Kim Basinger read the snub out loud from the Oscars podium. AFI put it on their greatest American films list anyway.
In the Spotlight
Highest 2 Lowest (2025), his Kurosawa remake with Denzel Washington, is their first film together since Inside Man in 2006. It premiered at Cannes and A24 took it theatrical. The institutional recognition has been arriving late: Honorary Oscar in 2015, competitive win for BlacKkKlansman in 2019, National Medal of Arts in 2023. He wore a Palestinian flag embroidered outfit to the 2026 NBA All-Star Game and waited three days to explain himself on Instagram. Nobody mistakes him for a legacy act.

His production company is called 40 Acres and a Mule, named after the land reparations promised to freed enslaved people after the Civil War and never delivered. He's been a tenured NYU film professor since 2002. Martin Scorsese was one of his teachers there, and he shared a classroom with Ang Lee. His Knicks courtside obsession is 30-plus years deep. The Knicks revoked his regular MSG entrance in 2020 and called his complaint laughable. Cam'ron publicly asked him to stop attending in 2022 over a bad luck superstition. He keeps showing up.
