Rise to Fame
A talent agency audition in Madrid, 300 girls deep, ended with a 15-year-old from Alcobendas walking out with a contract. Within three years she'd landed her film debut in Bigas Luna's Jamon Jamon, a raunchy Spanish comedy that won the Silver Lion at Venice and introduced her opposite a young Javier Bardem. She was 17.
The Almodovar years started in 1997 with Live Flesh and accelerated through All About My Mother, which broke internationally. But the real pivot was Volver in 2006: a second Goya, a shared Best Actress prize at Cannes, and the first Oscar nomination for a Spanish actress. She wasn't crossing over to Hollywood. She was dragging Spanish cinema's credibility with her.

Four Oscar nominations and a win for Vicky Cristina Barcelona make her Spain's only Academy Award-winning actress. That distinction hasn't faded into a legacy act. Parallel Mothers earned her a Volpi Cup at Venice and another Oscar nomination in 2022. Michael Mann cast her in Ferrari the following year, and critics called it her best work since the Woody Allen film.

She doesn't need a blockbuster salary when the luxury contracts reportedly run into the millions annually each. She donated her salary from The Hi-Lo Country to Mother Teresa's mission in Calcutta and spent time working in a leprosy clinic there. She's said she was more excited about that than getting the greatest movie role. That tracks with someone who keeps her two kids off phones and social media entirely, telling interviewers their brains are "still forming."
The Bardem marriage is the other through line. They met on Jamon Jamon in 1992, didn't start dating until 2007 on the set of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and married in the Bahamas in 2010. They've now appeared in eight films together. In more than half of her Almodovar collaborations, she plays a pregnant woman or a matriarch, which makes you wonder how much of her onscreen identity Almodovar built and how much she brought to him.
