Rise to Fame
She spent years doing small TV spots before 30 Rock gave her a comedy foothold as Abby Flynn. Then Broadway's Once put her in serious company, earning a Tony nomination and a Grammy with the cast album. CBS cast her as Tracy McConnell, the mother in How I Met Your Mother, a role the show spent nine seasons refusing to reveal. She didn't appear fully until the Season 8 finale, then became a series regular in Season 9, carrying the weight of every fan theory that had built since 2005.

Palm Springs arrived at Sundance in January 2020 and made a case she could carry a major comedy. Then The Penguin arrived in 2024 and changed the argument. Playing Sofia Falcone, the obsessive, violent daughter of Gotham's crime boss opposite Colin Farrell, she beat Cate Blanchett at the 2025 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series. Critics' Choice Award, Emmy, Golden Globe nomination. The villain turn is what she was built for.
Side Notes
She grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in an Italian-American family she calls 'Olive Garden Italian,' with a father who worked as a recording engineer. She dropped out of NYU within her first year, saying she was 'so unhappy there.' The strange career through-line is music: Once got her the Grammy and the Tony nomination, HIMYM cast her partly because Tracy McConnell had to be a musician, and she fronted bands throughout high school long before Hollywood noticed. The instruments didn't make the career, but they threaded through all of it.
