Rise to Fame
He spent three decades doing European TV dramas and forgettable Austrian crime series before Quentin Tarantino rewrote what a 53-year-old character actor's career could look like. Quentin Tarantino had been trying to cast the SS officer Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds for months and feared the part was unplayable, until Waltz walked in and delivered the script in fluent German, French, and English. The role won him every prize available, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Quentin Tarantino then wrote Django Unchained's Dr. King Schultz specifically for him, and Waltz won a second Oscar. Arriving at the top of his profession at middle age is its own kind of argument.
In the Spotlight
Two Oscars in three years looked like the start of something. It turned out to be the peak. His Bond villain Blofeld in Spectre and No Time to Die gave him almost nothing to work with, and the critical consensus is that Hollywood has mostly used him as decorative continental menace since. Old Guy (2025) landed with poor reviews and a 5.3 on IMDB. The recent work is more interesting: he's playing Billy Wilder in Stephen Frears' Wilder and Me, turned up in Only Murders in the Building Season 5 as an AI tycoon, and already made his directorial debut with Georgetown (2021), a film about a DC socialite murder case. The projects are better. Whether the form follows is another conversation.

His maternal grandmother was a Burgtheater actress. His great-grandfather and step-grandfather were stage actors too. His father designed sets, his mother designed costumes. His maternal grandfather studied under Freud. He grew up attending opera twice a week and wanted a professional singing career before concluding his voice wasn't strong enough. The Max Reinhardt Seminar expelled him for bad behavior, then readmitted him. He trained with both Strasberg and Adler in New York. Three decades of German and Austrian television followed. The family infrastructure, the triple citizenship (German, Austrian, American), the late start, none of it looked like a plan until Quentin Tarantino.
