Rise to Fame
She was 15 when Fox put her in Married with Children as Kelly Bundy in 1987. Playing TV's most committed airhead for 11 seasons meant spending her entire adolescence and most of her twenties inside one joke. The trick was she wasn't in on it. Ed O'Neill has said only someone with real intelligence could play clueless that convincingly for that long. When the show ended in 1997, she was 25 and had to figure out who else she could be.
In the Spotlight
She was filming the final season of Dead to Me when she realized her legs weren't working right. The MS diagnosis came in June 2021, announced publicly in August. She finished the season anyway, often arriving to set in a wheelchair. At the 2024 Emmys, the room stood before she even reached the mic. She's said she stays mostly in bed now and probably won't appear on camera again. That's a hard ending for someone who spent 11 years being impossible to look away from.
Side Notes
In 2008, she tested positive for the BRCA gene and chose a double mastectomy even though cancer was only in one breast. Before surgery, she staged a nude photo shoot to document her body. She spent years in public calling it a 'blessing.' In 2026, she said that was a lie - she was 'alone and sad and mourning something that is the most intimate and devastating of amputations.' Two health crises in thirteen years, and she's still the one correcting the record.
