Rise to Fame

The late '90s teen movie wave needed a specific type: pretty enough for the poster, self-aware enough to survive it. Amy Smart fit that slot. Varsity Blues (1999) put her opposite James Van Der Beek in a sleeper hit, and Road Trip (2000) stretched the run. She had range for darker material, The Butterfly Effect and Crank (2006) showed that, but the teen-movie window she'd stepped into was closing fast. The industry found the next version of her type. She didn't fight it.

In the Spotlight

Barbara Whitmore on DC's Stargirl was the biggest TV role she'd landed in a decade, running from 2020 until The CW cancelled the show after its third season in 2022. Since then, her public footprint is more lifestyle than film set. She and husband Carter Oosterhouse run Bonobo Winery in Michigan and she co-owns an eco-friendly bedding company. The overall impression is someone who quietly stepped off the Hollywood treadmill and doesn't appear to miss the pace.

Side Notes

She and Carter Oosterhouse met at an environmental conference in LA and bonded over Michigan roots before marrying in Traverse City in 2011. The eco-lifestyle angle predates the Instagram-homesteading trend by a decade. Their daughter Flora arrived via surrogacy in December 2016 after infertility struggles they've discussed publicly. Running a winery in Michigan while the industry has largely moved on from her doesn't read as a sad story. It reads as a plan.
