Rise to Fame

A year after appearing in Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can, Adams was unemployed. That's how it goes when you're a supporting player in a famous film and nobody knows your name yet. Junebug (2005) was the turn: a Sundance entry where she played a cheerful, chatty pregnant woman in a Southern family drama. Special jury prize, Critics' Choice Award, her first Oscar nomination. Enchanted (2007) confirmed the rest, a live-action Disney musical where she played the princess straight, without irony.

In the Spotlight

Six Oscar nominations, zero wins. Two decades of difficult material, no statuette to show for it. Sharp Objects (HBO, 2018) added an Emmy nomination. Nightbitch (2024), where she plays a mother who occasionally transforms into a dog, earned a Golden Globe nod and showed she still gravitates to unconventional material. Bond Group Entertainment, her production company since 2019, means the next chapter isn't waiting on anyone else's script. The career is doing fine. The Oscar shelf just stays empty.

Side Notes

She auditioned for a Disney princess role at a theme park when she was 19 and didn't get hired. Enchanted (2007) was the better outcome. Adams was born in Aviano, Italy, where her father was stationed with the Army, grew up Mormon in Castle Rock, Colorado, and has been dyeing her naturally blonde hair red for long enough that it reads as permanent. She still takes Ritalin for an ADHD diagnosis from elementary school. The Disney princess biography doesn't usually include any of that.
